宇田田 薫（うただ かおる）は、日米カウンシル（U.S.-Japan Council）のプログラム＆パートナーシップ・ディレクターとして、東京オフィスを拠点に活動しています。ニューヨーク市出身の日系アメリカ人で、自身を「新二世（Shin-Nisei）」の“逆輸入型”と表現しています。祖先のルーツは山口県と東京にあります。

日米カウンシルでは、30以上のTOMODACHIプログラムの企画・運営に携わり、リーダーシップ育成のパイプラインを強化するためのアルムナイ（卒業生）ネットワークの立ち上げを主導しました。また、学生や若手社会人が日米関係の発展に積極的に関われるプラットフォームの創出にも取り組んでいます。

非営利セクターに携わる以前は、約10年間にわたり放送ジャーナリズムの分野でキャリアを築き、ABC News、フジテレビ、NHKなどの日米の主要テレビ局でニュース番組のディレクターおよびプロデューサーを務めました。政治、経済、社会、国際問題など幅広いテーマを取材・制作しています。

日米カウンシルでの活動に加え、全米各地の日本語補習校で学んだ日系アメリカ人のバイリンガル・バイカルチュラル人材をつなぐ非営利団体、Hoshuko Alumni Association, Inc.（HAA, Inc.）を創設しました。また、防災・災害対応にも強い関心を持ち、2011年の東日本大震災後に東北地域での復興支援活動に関わったことをきっかけに、日本への移住を決意しました。

スキッドモア大学（Skidmore College）にてアジア研究および心理学の学士号（BA）を取得。ニューヨーク大学（New York University）ではグローバル・アフェアーズを学びました。

Kaoru Utada is the Director of Programs & Partnerships at the U.S.-Japan Council, based in the Tokyo office. A Japanese American Shin-Nisei (new second generation) “reverse import” from New York City with ancestral roots in Yamaguchi and Tokyo. 

At USJC, Kaoru has developed and managed more than 30 TOMODACHI programs, launched the alumni engagement wing to strengthen the leadership pipeline, and created platforms for students and young professionals to contribute actively to U.S.-Japan relations.

Before entering the nonprofit sector, she spent nearly a decade in broadcast journalism, directing and producing news segments for major American and Japanese television networks—including ABC News, Fuji TV, and NHK—covering political, economic, social, and international issues.

Beyond USJC, Kaoru founded the Hoshuko Alumni Association, Inc. (HAA, Inc.), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit uniting bilingual, bicultural Japanese Americans who have studied in Japanese Weekend Schools across the United States. She is also committed to disaster response and preparedness, which inspired her move to Japan after supporting recovery efforts in the Tohoku region following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. 

Kaoru holds a BA in Asian Studies and Psychology from Skidmore College, and studied Global Affairs at New York University.
